Joyce ~ This is the time to beef up the soil for next season. Generous amounts of organics should be turned in to the soil, ie. compost, dehydrated or composted cow manure, peat humus, chopped seaweed, kelp meal, gypsum for drainage, lime (if indicated by a soil test) for acidity, rock phosphate and greensand. Well, maybe not all of the above, but certainly the compost and lime for starters.

Better still, in addition to the November 1st class on Wild Birds, register for the 10/11, 10/18 and 10/25 workshops... all appropriate for your situation. Click on the sidebar of either GardenAuthor or 'Corliss Clips' ("Saturday Sessions") for the complete schedule.

At corlissclips.blogspot.com, you'll find the newly posted 4-page October garden newsletter... lots of tips there, as well.

Lastly thanks for becoming a GardenAuthor follower and congratulations on your community garden plot (and getting out the boulder)! ~ Deb

Joyce ~ There's a lot to learn about all phases of gardening... and the lessons are ongoing - almost 40 years within the green industry have taught me this. New technologies, techniques and products make horticulture an ever-evolving field of endeavor. But, it's always challenging and always interesting.

It's a noble ambition to grow one's own food and at 30' x 30', your efforts are certainly ambitious. This is a fine time to start such a project, as you have the winter to plan and make important crop decisions, after a few fall preparations.

Feel free to drop by 'GardenAuthor' any time, with questions or comments, and I look forward to meeting you at a Corliss workshop, soon. ~ Deb
